In addition to all the action on the field, the 2014-15 international free agent signing period opened on Wednesday. All of the notable signings can be seen right here. The Yankees in particular went wild and spent way more than their assigned spending pool.

Here is a recap of the rest of Wednesday's news from around the league.


Padres: Signed OF Seth Smith to a two-year extension worth $13 million, the team announced. The deal includes a $7 million club option for 2017 ($250,000 buyout). The team has told Smith he will not be traded at the deadline. (Jon Heyman)

Rockies: Acquired RHP Jair Jurrjens from the Reds for minor league 1B Harold Riggins, the team announced.

White Sox: Claimed RHP Angel Sanchez off waivers from the Rays, the team announced.


Mets: GM Sandy Alderson said the team is not ready to sell just yet. LHP Jonathon Niese is unlikely to be traded either way. (Jon Heyman)

Nationals: LHP Ross Detwiler could generate interest prior to the trade deadline. (Jon Heyman)

Padres: MLB executive Kim Ng is under consideration for the vacant GM position. She would be the first female GM in MLB history (Jon Heyman) ... interviewed D'Backs scouting director Ray Montgomery for the GM job, the team announced.


Blue Jays: Signed ninth overall pick RHP Jeff Hoffman and 11th overall pick C Max Pentecost, the club announced. They received $3.08 million and $2.89 million slot bonuses, respectively. (Jon Heyman)

Mets: Still working on some details with 10th overall pick Michael Conforto after agreeing to a $2.97 million slot bonus. (Jon Heyman)


Astros: OF Dexter Fowler (intercostal) is expected to resume baseball activities next week (Houston Chronicle) ... LHP Dallas Keuchel (wrist) is expected to make his next start on Friday. (Houston Chronicle)

Athletics: Manager Bob Melvin said "there's a chance" LHP Eric O'Flaherty (Tommy John surgery) will be activated off the disabled list on Thursday.

Cardinals: GM John Mozeliak confirmed RHP Joe Kelly will likely make two more minor league rehab starts before rejoining the rotation.

Dodgers: Will decide whether to place SS Hanley Ramirez (calf) on the 15-day DL on Thursday, according to manager Don Mattingly.

Giants: OF Angel Pagan will receive another epidural for his ailing back on Thursday. There is still no timetable for his return ... 1B Brandon Belt (thumb) will be activated off the 15-day DL on Friday. (San Francisco Chronicle)

Mariners: LHP James Paxton (shoulder) is expected to throw a simulated game next week. (710 AM Seattle)

Orioles: RHP Suk-Min Yoon (shoulder) received a cortisone shot to help with an impingement. (MASN Sports)

Padres: Placed SS Everth Cabrera on the 15-day DL with a hamstring strain, the team announced.

Phillies: LHP Cliff Lee (elbow) has been cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment. (MLB.com)

Rockies: An MRI showed that RHP Jhoulys Chacin has a strained rotator cuff and fraying in his labrum (MLB.com) ... 3B Nolan Arenado (finger) will be activated off the 15-day DL on Friday (Denver Post) ... OF Carlos Gonzalez (finger) will take batting practice on Thursday and RHP Eddie Butler (shoulder) will throw live batting practice on Sunday. (MLB.com)

Twins: Placed 1B Joe Mauer on the 15-day DL with an oblique injury.

Yankees: 1B Mark Teixeira had his knee drained on Tuesday and is day-to-day, manager Joe Girardi announced.


3B Alex Rodriguez: A book excerpt said the league gave him approval to take testosterone during his MVP-winning 2007 season. MLB issued a statement soon thereafter ... A-Rod is reportedly being sued for unpaid legal fees.

Athletics: City representatives are expected to reject their new 10-year lease proposal.

Nationals: Some players reportedly "resent" OF Bryce Harper and the attention he receives.
