Earlier this week, relievers Ernesto Frieri and Jason Grilli were swapped by the Pirates and Angels for each other. As Grilli went from Pittsburgh to Kansas City to meet up with his new team, Frieri was going from Kansas City to Pittsburgh. Each had a layover in Chicago. And in an unbelievable coincidence, they haphazardly met for the first time in a bathroom.
"I'm waiting for my next flight, so I just went to a bathroom to wash my face. First thing, I look at this guy washing his hands next to me," said Frieri, "and I thought, 'I think I know this guy.'
"I looked again, and he's looking at me and goes, 'Really? Well, I guess this is when we get to meet each other.'"
It was Jason Grilli, the fellow reliever for whom Frieri had been traded hours earlier and himself was en route from Pittsburgh to Kansas City to join the Angels.
That's hilarious. Anyone who has ever been to O'Hare knows that it's a monster of an airport -- one of America's biggest -- and even people with similar flight schedules who know each other might not even get the chance to meet up.
