Thursday night, news broke that Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia has been shut down with fluid in his knee. It was reported that there was no set timetable for his return to the field, but the news got a bit more specific Friday. Manager Joe Girardi was asked if Sabathia's season is over. His reply?

"I think that's probably fair to say." (via LoHud Yankees blog)

Sabathia has significant damage to the cartilage in his right knee and might require microfracture surgery.

Sabathia will turn 34 years old later this month. He is 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA (76 ERA+) and 1.48 WHIP in 46 innings this season. Last year, he went 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA (84 ERA+) in 211 innings. He led the majors with 112 earned runs allowed.

The big lefty was outstanding in his first four seasons with the Yankees. When he nearly opted out of his first deal with the club after the 2011 season, he instead signed a new, five-year, $122 million extension that runs through the 2016 season -- and it also includes a $25 million vesting option for 2017, which is tied to health in 2016.
