Another Independence Day in the books here in America. Some great baseball was witnessed across the country, among many other things. Let's round up some news and notes for the day.

The Cubs sent starters Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the A's for Oakland's last two first-round picks, Dan Straily and a player to be named later.


Blue Jays: The club activated Brett Cecil from the DL and optioned Anthony Gose to the minors.

Giants: As expected, Brandon Belt was activated from the DL.

Mariners: Corey Hart was activated from the DL. Also, Justin Smoak was activated from the DL in order to be demoted to Triple-A, the club announced.

Marlins: Derek Dietrich was placed on the 15-day DL and Jake Marisnick was again recalled from Triple-A.

Rangers: Former All-Star closer Neftali Feliz was promoted from Triple-A, the club announced. Joe Saunders was released as a corresponding move.

Rockies: Recently-acquired Jair Jurrjens was promoted from the minors to make a start Friday night. Also, the club signed Chris Capuano.


Angels: General manager Jerry Dipoto said the club isn't yet a finished product, meaning they'll look to improve via trade (

A's: They're looking for a second baseman and a starting pitcher, reports Jim Bowden.

Blue Jays: They've scouted Martin Prado, Aaron Hill and Chase Headley, reports Jim Bowden.

Red Sox: Jon Lester told the team he wants to wait until after the season to negotiate a possible extension, reports Jon Heyman.


A's: An MRI has revealed a tear in Kyle Blanks' left calf, so he's going to be out for a while ( Also, Brandon Moss sprained his ankle Friday (

Cardinals: Joe Kelly needs two more rehab starts before he's able to rejoin the rotation (

Dodgers: Hanley Ramirez left the game Thursday after being hit in the hand with a pitch, but X-rays were negative and the Dodgers announced his removal from the game was precautionary. Also, Carl Crawford is set for at least five Triple-A rehab games (

Giants: Angel Pagan isn't expected to return to the team before the All-Star break (

Mariners: James Paxton threw a 52-pitch bullpen session and will next have a simulated game Tuesday (

Mets: David Wright's shoulder injury again kept him out of the lineup Friday, but he's still expected to avoid the disabled list (ESPN New York). Also, Jon Niese was forced from Friday's game after just 1/3 of an inning pitched after a line drive hit him in the ribs.

Phillies: Carlos Ruiz is making progress, albeit slowly, in returning from his concussion (

Pirates: Gerrit Cole left his start Friday after five innings due to a sore lat muscle, but the Pirates had a big league and it's not believed to be serious.
