The Reds have placed first baseman Joey Votto on the 15-day disabled list because of an injury to his left quad/knee, the team announced on Tuesday. Not long ago, Votto spent 25 days on the DL with the same injury. To take Votto's spot on the active roster, the Reds have reinstated catcher Brayan Pena from the paternity list.

This season, Votto, age 30, is batting .255/.390/.409 (124 OPS+) with six homers in 62 games. He's not hitting for average or power this year, but his .390 OBP is an important part of the Reds' offense. Even in decline, Votto will be missed, and that's especially the case considering the Reds are light on adequate replacements.
