With Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka landing on the disabled list Wednesday, the American League All-Star roster was presented with a vacancy to fill. Red Sox closer Koji Uehara will be the man to take the spot, MLB announced Wednesday early evening.

Though he finished seventh in AL Cy Young voting last season and was on the mound for the last out of the ALDS, ALCS and World Series, this is Uehara's first time being named an All-Star in Major League Baseball. He was an eight-time All-Star in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball for the Yomiuri Giants (1999-2005, 2007).

Uehara, 39, has saved 18 games in 19 chances with a 1.30 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 52 strikeouts against only six walks in 41 2/3 innings this season.
