Another night, another big set of bulletpoints below (without the actual bulletpoints, mind you). As a reminder, this is our quick hits roundup, so for the full story, when applicable, click on the provided linkage. Onward ...

ROSTER MOVES

Cubs: Highly-touted prospect Arismendy Alcantara was called up, but the Cubs plan to send him back down the minors once Darwin Barney's paternity leave is over. Also, pitching prospect Kyle Hendricks will make his MLB debut Thursday.

Mariners: Seattle unexpectedly optioned rookie starting pitcher Taijuan Walker back to Triple-A, though it seems likely they are doing so just to keep him on normal rest through the All-Star break.

Red Sox: A.J. Pierzynski was designated for assignment.

Yankees: Masahiro Tanaka has been placed on the DL with an elbow injury.

REPORTS, RUMORS and SPECULATION

Diamondbacks: Despite some recent troubles, Addison Reed is still the Arizona closer (azcentral.com).

Phillies: The club is unlikely to trade Cole Hamels (Phillies.com). Jonathan Papelbon doesn't seem to have an issue with being traded.

Rangers: Relievers Jason Frasor and Neal Cotts could be traded this month (Rangers.com).

Rockies: Troy Tulowitzki has given the club his "subtle blessing" to be traded, but it appears he'll stay put anyway, reports Jon Heyman.

White Sox: Third overall pick Carlos Rodon is close to signing with the club for a touch more than $6.45M, reports Jon Heyman.

INJURY UPDATES

Angels: Expect Jered Weaver to make his scheduled start Saturday (latimes.com).

Astros: Jason Castro is making progress toward a return on Friday (Ultimate Astros) and Dexter Fowler might be back Saturday (Ultimate Astros).

Blue Jays: Adam Lind has a broken foot and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Braves: Evan Gattis is making at least minor progress toward returning (ajc.com).

Brewers: Ryan Braun was held out of the lineup Wednesday with lingering back issues, but the reason was simply to rest his back (Brewers.com).

Cardinals: Yadier Molina left Wednesday's game with a sprained right thumb.

Dodgers: Carl Crawford will be back soon, but he'll end up on the bench.

Phillies: Cliff Lee threw 59 pitches in a rehab start for Class-A Clearwater, allowing three runs in four innings (philly.com).

Rays: Yunel Escobar is set to return Friday (Rays.com).

Reds: Brandon Phillips left Wednesday's game with a sprained left thumb. It was also announced Billy Hamilton left the game with a hamstring issue, though it didn't sound too serious. Further, Jack Hannahan went 1-for-3 with a double in his first rehab game for Class A Dayton (Reds.com).

Royals: Alex Gordon needs an MRI on his ailing wrist while Jason Vargas needed an emergency appendectomy. Mike Moustakas was also out due to the flu (Royals.com).

White Sox: Avisail Garcia took batting practice and is still holding out hope his season isn't over (Whitesox.com).

Yankees: Carlos Beltran was a late scratch from the starting lineup Wednesday after his own line drive in batting practice came back to hit him in the eye. Brett Gardner was also out due to a lower abdominal strain.

MISCELLANY

All-Star Game: Koji Uehara is the replacement for the injured Tanaka. Also, MLB announced that Chris Sale and Anthony Rizzo were leading their respective leagues in the Final Vote competition with just one day to go.

Dodgers: The team was found negligent in the Bryan Stow civil trial.
