In the six inning of Saturday afternoon's game (GameTracker), Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes struck out against Astros lefty Brett Oberholtzer. There is nothing particularly notable about that in and of itself, though Gomes does tend to mash lefties. Still, he's not going to get a hit every time up.
Technically, Oberholtzer struck Gomes out swinging. To the naked eye, it looked more like a called strike three on a pitch too far inside and maybe a little high. Here's the pitch:
Did you see what happened there? It's subtle. Here's the explanation:
Jonny Gomes struck out when a two-strike pitch hit the knob of his bat -- he wasn't swinging -- and was caught by the catcher.— Brian MacPherson (@brianmacp) July 12, 2014
Striking out on a foul tip off the knob of the bat definitely feels like something that could only happen to these 2014 Red Sox. It's been that kind of year.
