Padres tweet tribute to the late Tony Gwynn following All-Star Game

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer

More All-Star Game: AL wins 5-3 | Trout named MVP | Full All-Star Coverage

Tuesday night's All-Star Game was memorable for several reasons, none more notable than Derek Jeter's farewell. The torch was passed to Mike Trout, who was named MVP. Adam Wainwright even stirred up a non-controversy with some unwise comments.

One thing that was missing from the game was some kind of Tony Gwynn tribute. The first-ballot Hall of Famer died one month ago Wednesday but there was no mention of him (or the late Don Zimmer) during the broadcast. It was disappointing. After the game, the Padres took matters into their own hands with this powerful tweet:

Ted Williams died a week before the 2002 Midsummer Classic and they renamed the All-Star Game MVP award for him that year. Gwynn died a month ago. Acknowledging the untimely death of the best pure hitter of his generation during the All-Star Game would have been nice.
