MLB issues statement on not mentioning Gwynn at All-Star Game

In light of the criticism from many for no mention of the recently deceased Tony Gwynn during the All-Star Game, Major League Baseball and Fox have released a statement. Here it is:

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, an extraordinary individual whose memory we have honored in numerous ways in recent weeks. The Baseball family has sadly lost a number of people this year - including Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner, Frank Cashen, and former All-Stars Jerry Coleman, Jim Fregosi and Don Zimmer - and did not want to slight anyone by singling out one individual.

That might be fair if the league and network didn't spend the entire game singling out Derek Jeter in a huge love-fest. Instead, frankly, it's a bit of an embarrassing statement. If anything, it seems to have made the situation worse. It's an All-Star Game, which is literally singling out star baseball players and, again, they singled out Derek Jeter plenty -- one year after singling out Mariano Rivera plenty.

One idea I've heard that makes a lot of sense is for MLB to have a montage kind of like the Oscars, where it honors all the game has lost in the past year in a quick video tribute. Maybe do it during the seventh-inning stretch of the All-Star Game. Something like that would be pretty cool.

Regardless, it was pretty lame to mention Jeter 100 times and Gwynn zero -- and I believe this statement made it even worse.
