Late last week, struggling Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain admitted that he's been pitching through a sore elbow this season, and now it has landed him on the disabled list. The Giants announced the roster move Monday, which is retroactive to July 11.
Cain wasn't alone, as first baseman Brandon Belt himself landed on the seven-day concussion DL.
Cain, a 29-year-old three-time All-Star, is just 2-7 with a 4.18 ERA (82 ERA+), 1.25 WHIP and 70 strikeouts in 90 1/3 innings this season. He's actually strung together three straight quality starts, but obviously pitching through an elbow injury isn't worthwhile.
Belt, 26, is hitting .242/.304/.455 (116 OPS+) with 10 homers and 23 RBI in 46 games. He was on the DL for almost two months after suffering a broken thumb earlier this season.
