Athletics: LHP Tommy Milone asked for a trade after being sent down earlier this month. The team is likely to hold onto him for depth ... Mariners IF Nick Franklin is a "top target" as they look for upgrades at second base. (San Francisco Chronicle)
Phillies: LHP Cliff Lee was rusty in his return from the disabled list. The team might be better off holding on to him at the trade deadline and letting him make more starts before swinging an August trade .... telling teams that LHP Cole Hamels is not available. (ESPN)
Royals: Considering a trade for Rangers OF Alex Rios (Jon Heyman) ... GM Dayton Moore said he is not planning to sell before the deadline. “I'm not going to give up on our team ... We need the group of players we have to produce. We believe they will,” he said. (Fox Sports)

Phillies: Designated OF Tony Gwynn Jr. for assignment, the club announced. The move cleared a spot on the roster for Lee.
Rockies: Designated RHP Jair Jurrjens for assignment, the team announced.
Mariners: LHP Roenis Elias left Monday's start with cramping in his forearm, the team announced.
