The Discovery Channel has a new show airing Wednesdays at 9/8c called "American Muscle," in which trainer Mike Barwis works with athletes on different strength and conditioning techniques. Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is going to be on the episode that airs this Wednesday, and the most intriguing part of the episode involves Swisher throwing beer kegs to help improve his baseball swing.
Yes, there's actual muscle technique in here. See for yourself:
Barwis has a host of professional athletes on hand, including several NFL players, who are a bit taken aback why MLB's guaranteed salaries -- specifically discussing Swisher's big-dollar contract.
Swisher didn't sign for $70 million. It was a four-year, $56 million deal with the Indians prior to the 2013 season, but one can understand the NFL players missing that figure -- since so often they sign deals that are "worth" a number they never come close to seeing.
The interesting part there is to note that Swisher got far less money than many thought he would. There was talk about one point of a nine-figure deal.
Swisher is currently hitting .207/.285/.344 with 17 doubles and eight homers for the Indians, so some of the lament in there is understandable. One statement that was accurate, though: The hardest thing to do in sports is to hit a baseball. Well, at least hit it well, like, say, Miguel Cabrera does.
Regardless, I've actually set my DVR to check out the whole episode of American Muscle with Swisher on it Wednesday evening. Looks fun.
