Mets right-hander Bartolo Colon was seven outs away from throwing a perfect game against the Mariners in Seattle on Wednesday. He was bidding to throw the 24th perfect game in MLB history and first since Felix Hernandez in June of 2012.

Robinson Cano (who else?) broke up the perfect game and no-hit bit with one swing of the bat, lining a solid single the other way to left. Colon had thrown 58 of his 84 pitches for strikes and had only gone to three three-ball counts up until that point.

Colon, 41, came into Wednesday's start with an 8-8 record and a 4.12 ERA on the season, his first with the Mets. They signed him to a two-year, $20 million contract over the winter. Colon has been the subject of trade rumors in recent weeks and flirting with a perfect game sure won't hurt his stock.

The Mariners came into Wednesday ranking 23rd in batting average (.246) and 27th in on-base percentage (.300) in baseball, so they're hardly an offensive powerhouse. They do have two top notch hitters in Cano and Kyle Seager, however.

Johan Santana threw the only no-hitter in Mets history back in June 2012. The Mariners were on the wrong end of Phil Humber's perfect game in 2012. Safeco Field has already been home to two perfect games in its relatively brief history -- Hernandez's and Phil Humber's.

Josh Beckett, Tim Lincecum and Clayton Kershaw have already thrown no-hitters this season. Kershaw did not walk or hit a batter in his no-hitter, but a runner did reach on an error.
