The Athletics on Thursday designated struggling reliever Jim Johnson for assignment. Per MLB rules, the team now has 10 days to trade, release or waive him.

Johnson has struggled mightily in his first season in Oakland: 6.92 ERA, 1.22 K/BB ratio, 20 unintentional walks in 40 1/3 innings. For his career, he owns an ERA+ of 124 across parts of nine big-league seasons. Johnson was an All-Star in 2012 as a member of the Orioles.

This past offseason, the A's acquired Johnson from the Orioles in exchange for Jemile Weeks and David Freitas. Johnson is owed the balance of a $10-million contract for this season.
