After a series of injuries struck their infield, the Giants have called up second baseman Dan Uggla from their Triple-A affiliate, the team announced. They signed him to a minor league contract after the Braves released him a few days ago.

Uggla, 34, went 2-for-7 with a double in his two games at Triple-A. The team's original plan was to give him an extended look in the minors before deciding whether he could help them and was worth a call up. Plans changed following the injuries.

In 48 games with the Braves before being released, Uggla hit .162/.241/.231 (33 OPS+) with two home runs. He hit .179/.309/.362 (84 OPS+) with 22 homers in 136 games a year ago. Atlanta released Uggla with approximately $19 million left on his contract.

In addition to calling up Uggla, the Giants have placed Marco Scutaro and Ehire Adrianza on the 15-day DL with back and hamstring problems, respectively. Scutaro has missed just about the entire season with back trouble. Infielder Joe Panik is also nursing an ankle injury.
