The Dodgers have acquired infielder Darwin Barney and cash from the Cubs, the team announced. Chicago will receive a player to be named later in the deal.

Barney, 28, was designated for assignment last week, giving the club 10 days to trade, release or waive him. The Cubs have started to call up some of their top young prospects, most notably second baseman Arismendy Alcantara.

In 72 games in 217 plate appearances this year, Barney is hitting a soft .230/.265/.328 (62 OPS+) with two home runs. He has never been much of a hitter (70 OPS+ in over 2,000 plate appearances) but Barney is a standout defender at second base.

The Dodgers will use Barney off the bench, where he will be their fourth middle infield option behind Hanley Ramirez, Dee Gordon and Justin Turner. Chone Figgins is currently on the disabled list with a hip injury.
