The Cardinals have acquired veteran right-hander Justin Masterson from the Indians in exchange for minor-league outfielder James Ramsey. CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman has confirmed the original report of Peter Gammons.

The 29-year-old Masterson this season has pitched to a 5.51 ERA in 98 innings of work. However, a lingering knee injury no doubt played a role in those disappointing numbers (he's been on the DL since July 8 but is set to come off later this week), and the sinker-baller is coming off a 2013 campaign in which he logged a 3.35 ERA in 193 innings and made the All-Star team. Across parts of seven big-league seasons, Masterson owns an ERA+ of 96.

Masterson is owed the balance of a $9.76 million salary for this season and is eligible for free agency this winter.

As for Ramsey, the 24-year-old outfielder is capable of manning center, and this season he's batting .300/.389/.527 for Double-A Springfield. The Cardinals originally drafted him out of Florida State with the 23rd overall pick in 2012.
