Phillies lefty Cliff Lee was forced to depart his start against the Nationals on Thursday night (GameTracker) because of a possible elbow injury. In the third inning, here's what happened ...

Lee was shortly thereafter diagnosed with a left flexor pronator strain, which is the same injury that earlier this season sidelined him for almost 60 games. The expectation at this point is that Lee's done for 2014.

The anticipation had been that the Phillies would attempt to trade him (despite the minimum $37.5 million left on his contract) during the August waiver period, but now that's obviously not going to happen.

This season, Lee, age 35, has pitched to a 3.65 ERA and 6.00 K/BB ratio in 81 1/3 innings of work.
