Tough news for the Royals, as first baseman Eric Hosmer will miss up to the next six weeks because of a non-displaced fracture in his right hand. As Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star tweets, Hosmer believes he originally sustained the injury on July 20, when he was struck on the hand by a pitch from Jon Lester.

Hosmer this season is batting .268/.314/.378 with six homers in 103 games. While his OPS+ of 91 isn't impressive, particularly by the standards of first basemen, Hosmer has been heating up of late (.901 OPS over the last four weeks). So he'll be missed by a team that's in the midst of a crowded AL wild card fray.

Hosmer, 24, is in his first year of salary arbitration and under contract for 2014 at a price of $3.6 million.
