The Diamondbacks are in the middle of a disastrous season. They have baseball's fourth worst record at 53-72, and they've received heavy criticism for their archaic "eye for an eye" beanball tactics.

The team hired Tony La Russa to oversee its front office and baseball operations three months ago, and once that happened, it seemed inevitable the club would make sweeping changes either during the season or over the winter. It appears that may not be the case, however.

La Russa told reporters, including the Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro, that the "season is a month and 10 days from being over, so it won't be long until you have to trot out your plan officially."

In addition to Gibson, GM Kevin Towers has been on the hot seat for the team's poor performance. He has been outspoken about their need to get tougher, which has been followed by the beanball antics. Arizona intentionally hit Ryan Braun and Andrew McCutchen with pitches this season after the Brewers and Pirates accidentally hit D-Backs players, for example.

Towers and his staff have traded away a lot of young players in recent years -- Justin Upton, Jarrod Parker, Ian Kennedy, Trevor Bauer and Adam Eaton, among others -- and in most cases the return has not had much impact at all.

Furthermore, letting Towers go but keeping Gibson would be an odd move. Usually new GMs are allowed to make their own managerial decisions.
