Rays' protest of loss to Blue Jays denied by MLB

By Dayn Perry | Baseball Writer

In the course of the Rays' loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday (TOR 5, TB 4), Toronto manager John Gibbons filed what appeared to be a late challenge to an on-field ruling. Here's how things unfolded ...

As our own Mike Axisa pointed out, Gibbons, as noted, appeared to lodge his challenge too late, but the umpires allowed the challenge and eventually Wil Myers was called out on the replay overturn. The Rays subsequently played the rest of the game under protest, and on Tuesday MLB handed down its ruling on said protest ...

Upheld protests are vanishingly rare things in MLB, but if you're given to literalist interpretations of the rulebook, then the Rays have cause to be unhappy about this outcome.
