Justin Masterson to only pitch from stretch Saturday

Cardinals starting pitcher Justin Masterson has struggled throughout the season, for the most part. He wasn't good at all for the Indians before being traded and since then he's been worse, with a 7.43 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in five starts.

He's due another start Saturday, and Masterson says he won't be winding up. Via Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

“For the most part, I was pitching out of the windup, and things would get better out of the stretch at times,” Masterson said at his locker in the visitors' clubhouse at PNC Park on Wednesday. “So we simplified it. I went only out of the stretch (in the bullpen). Less moving parts. You don't have to worry about step back, turn around, ready to throw. We're simplifying, really simplifying.”

Goold further reports that Masterson plans to ditch the windup Saturday and go exclusively from the stretch.

On the season, opposing hitters have hit .259/.363/.414 against Masterson from the windup and .312/.414/.455 from the stretch, so this isn't a move based upon how his statistics measure. There is something to be said for feeling comfortable, though, and if Masterson thinks he'll do better from the stretch, it's possible it'll help snap him out of his funk. At this point, it doesn't hurt to pull out all the stops and try new things.
