The Blue Jays-Rays game Wednesday evening in Tropicana Field (TOR @ TB gametracker) was delayed for a half hour. The root? A thunderstorm in the area, which seems odd, given that The Trop has a dome and games are played indoors. Let's let the Rays' official Twitter account explain how/why:
Tonight's power outage was caused by a lightning strike at the 16th Street substation.— Tampa Bay Rays (@RaysBaseball) September 4, 2014
There was one bank of lights in particular that could be seen on the broadcast that was wiped out, but the wide view makes it seem less than substantial, as Blue Jays reporter Scott MacArthur illustrates with a side helping of snark:
A bit brighter, but not much of a difference, eh?
Anyway, the delay is over and they're playing again.
In related news, the Rays have a lease with Tropicana Field through 2027 and haven't made noticable progress on breaking it, so far as public knowledge goes.
Also, I think Melky Cabrera heard the lightning blast at the aforementioned 16th St. substation ...
