Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka to throw bullpen session on Saturday

Is the waiting almost over for Masahiro Tanaka? (USATSI)
Is the waiting almost over for Masahiro Tanaka?(USATSI)

Masahiro Tanaka, the Yankees' 25-year-old rookie ace, hasn't seen game action since July 8 because of a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He had been working his way back, but some recent soreness shut him down.

Now, though, Tanaka is ready to resume his rehab: as Sweeny Murti tweets, Tanaka will throw a bullpen session on Saturday. That Tanaka is able to return to the mound so soon after that bout of general soreness is obviously a positive sign. He'd already progressed throwing breaking pitches and his splitter, so it's possible he'll be going to his full arsenal. The plan for some time has been to get Tanaka back in the rotation by mid-September, and presumably that time-frame is still in play.

This season, Tanaka has pitched 2.51 ERA (153 ERA+) and 1.01 WHIP and logged 135 strikeouts against just 19 walks in 129 1/3 innings.
