A few early observations from a wacky Opening Day

By Al Melchior | Data Analyst

I'm not sure I've written something that became obsolete as quickly as when I wrote earlier this afternoon in this blog that Jim Henderson is a "proven, solid option" as a Fantasy replacement for either Casey Janssen or Nate Jones. Ok, scratch Henderson from that list if you need saves right now, but I still like his long-term future better than that of newly-annointed Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez.

A few other quick impressions from the early Opening Day games ... I was especially interested to see how Jeff Samardzija and Dillon Gee fared, and though Samardzija had the better results, I was more encouraged by Gee. Take away his seventh inning, and he looked very solid, while Samardzija's command was not especially sharp ... I expected Chris Tillman to struggle against the Red Sox, but inefficiency (104 pitches in five innings) was not the problem I anticipated. And he was generally effective ... A nice game from Emilio Bonifacio in his Cubs debut, but I witnessed his four-hit Opening Day game for the Marlins five years ago. It was exciting but didn't amount to much production the rest of the way, and he probably won't have as much opportunity to play this year than he did with that Marlins squad.
