Home-away splits factor into making Fantasy pitching decisions - but there's a twist

By Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Whether it's the familiar bed, friendly crowd, wife's cooking or all of the above, some pitchers perform far better at home than on the road. This phenomenon can be a one-year wonder or a career tendency.

Many Fantasy owners consider home-away splits of individual hurlers when crafting a weekly lineup. But they should also be aware that it's not cut-and-dry, especially this early in the season. Perhaps the two away outings were in hitter's paradises such as the home parks of the Four R's: Reds, Red Sox, Rangers or Rockies. Perhaps those in question make their home starts in cavernous pitcher's parks such as those that house the Dodgers, Padres or Mets.

Once that knowledge is digested, owners can begin making intelligent decisions. Dozens of major league starters with enough appearances to consider it a trend have experienced pronounced home-road splits this season.

Some are throwaways. Jose Fernandez , for instance, owns a 0.70 ERA at home and 4.50 ERA on the road. Stephen Strasburg boasts a 2.25 ERA in Washington and 5.63 ERA in away games. But one would never dream about removing them from a lineup. Others are bad enough pitchers to ignore no matter where they are scheduled to play.

Here are some home-away splits (listed alphabetically) that should be considered along with matchups when making out a lineup:

Andrew Cashner: Home (2-1, 1.27); Road (0-3, 5.00)

Bartolo Colon: Home (1-2, 3.15); Road (1-2, 8.64)

R.A. Dickey: Home (2-1, 3.12); Road (0-2, 8.22)

Matt Garza: Home (2-2, 2.90); Road (0-1, 8.30)

Roberto Hernandez: Home (1-0, 2.46); Road (1-1, 7.04)

Tom Koehler: Home (3-0, 0.90); Road (0-4, 4.15)

Corey Kluber: Home (2-1, 2.43); Road (0-2, 5.87)

Zach McAllister: Home (2-0, 0.89); Road (1-2, 5.59)

Ricky Nolasco: Home (1-1, 2.12); Road (1-2, 8.72)

Tanner Roark: Home (1-0, 0.00); Road (1-1, 7.29)

Tyson Ross: Home (2-1, 1.67); Road (1-2, 5.94)

Travis Wood: Home (2-1, 2.39); Road (0-2, 5.56)
