I have had a long-standing pattern of being exceedingly patient with my opening day Fantasy roster. I'm not especially fond of tinkering with my roster after two weeks, much less two days, yet even I am finding it hard to ignore some players whom I passed over on draft day.

At this early stage, it's hard to take season-to-date performances seriously. However, we have already seen some players, like Jason Grilli and Chris Hatcher, thrust into roles that we didn't anticipate for them just a few days ago. Those role changes create opportunities that can put a player's value in a new light.

In today's scan of the waiver wire, there are two more pitchers -- Jeurys Familia and Yusmeiro Petit -- who suddenly look more attractive for mixed league rosters. I am also getting intrigued by Nick Markakis, but it's not really about him starting out 3 for 8.

Jeurys Familia, RP, Mets (27 percent owned)

With Jenrry Mejia going on the DL with triceps inflammation, the Mets are entrusting Familia with the closer's role. Familia is not the safest option in terms of job security, as he could be replaced by either Mejia or Bobby Parnell, depending on which one comes off the DL first. Then again, Familia was highly effective last season, particularly after the All-Star break when he averaged 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings and induced ground balls at a 60 percent rate. Those sound like closer numbers to me, and he has at least a chance to keep the job long-term and help mixed league owners in the process.

Yusmeiro Petit, SP/RP, Giants (35 percent owned)

Petit is still mired in a bullpen role, but the recent happenings in the Giants' rotation could create an opportunity for him to start sooner rather than later. Between Matt Cain (forearm) going on the DL and Ryan Vogelsong blowing up in his first start, making a spot start in place of Jake Peavy, Petit is looking more and more like a viable rotation candidate. The Giants have called on Chris Heston to start in Cain's place for now, but his minor league track record doesn't inspire much confidence. As a starter, Petit could provide a boost to your rotation's strikeout total and WHIP, and he's worth a stash in 12-team mixed Head-to-Head leagues (SPARP appeal!) and 14-team mixed Roto leagues.

Nick Markakis, OF, Braves (61 percent owned)

I passed on Markakis in draft after draft, as I was scared off by the neck fusion surgery he underwent in December. Even in the days just prior to the Braves' opener, there was concern that he wouldn't be ready. It doesn't hurt that Markakis has hit well in the early going, but most important is that he has started the year with back-to-back games and hasn't looked horrible. It's been a long time since Markakis has threatened to be a power source, but he should offer enough in terms of batting average and run production to be worth rostering in standard mixed leagues, especially in five outfielder formats.
