Milwaukee vs. San Diego

Brewers 13, Padres 2

PHOENIX (AP) Lyle Overbay is starting to hit the way the Milwaukee Brewers knew he could and the Arizona Diamondbacks wished he had.

Overbay, acquired in the Richie Sexson trade last winter, doubled three times and drove in five runs in Milwaukee's 13-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Thursday.

The Brewers hope to be more than the all-or-nothing team they were with Sexson as their lone slugger.

If the spring is any indication, they will be just that. They have only 10 home runs but lead all NL teams with 57 doubles, including seven by Overbay and eight by Junior Spivey, who also came over in the Sexson deal.

"We've said from the beginning when we traded Richie, we're trading home runs for doubles and the ability to manufacture runs," manager Ned Yost said. "Doubles are almost better. I mean, home runs are great, but when you've got guys who smack those doubles, you're in good shape, you've got a lot of guys in scoring position."

The Brewers lost one of the game's best power hitters in Sexson, who hit 119 homers the last three seasons.

"Yeah, but I think we might see an increase in runs scored," Yost said. "Which is more important? A drop-off in home runs? I'll take more runs any time."

Overbay tagged right-hander Ben Howard for an RBI double down the left-field line in the first and a three-run double into the gap in left-center in the second.

"I think last year during the season I was trying to yank and trying to do too much instead of taking that ball the other way," said the left-handed hitting Overbay. "I'm putting the ball in play a lot more."

Wes Obermueller gave up two runs and six hits in three innings. He was slated to go six innings but reached his pitch limit early, not because of wildness but because the Padres kept fouling off good pitches.

Mark Loretta went 3-for-3 for San Diego, raising his average to .512.

All-Star Geoff Jenkins was a late scratch and the Brewers said he had strep throat and will be out a few days.

Third baseman Wes Helms bruised his right hip when he crashed into the tarpaulin tube chasing a foul ball in the third inning. He stayed in and made a rally-saving lunge of Khalil Greene's liner to end the inning and finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Helms said it was only a bruise and won't keep him out of any games.

And right-hander Nick Neugebauer, recovering from shoulder surgery, threw a 21-pitch simulated game Thursday after his normal bullpen session and reported feeling better than he has all year.

Neugebauer hopes to get into a game before the Brewers break camp. He'll stay behind to continue his rehab in the warm weather.
