Detroit at Chicago

Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
  •

For the second time in a week, rainy conditions have forced the Chicago White Sox to play twice in one day. They're just hoping this twinbill provides them with more positive results.

The White Sox look for the weather to cooperate on Saturday when they face the Detroit Tigers in a doubleheader.

The teams' final three-game series of the season was scheduled to open Friday, but persistent rainfall led to Saturday's twinbill.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected Saturday. If both games can't be played, Chicago (81-65) and Detroit (70-76) would play a split doubleheader on Sunday. This is the Tigers' last visit to U.S. Cellular Field this season.

"We're here. When they say play, we're going to play," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

While this marks Detroit's first doubleheader of the year, it's the third for Chicago and its second in five days after dropping both games to Toronto on Tuesday. The White Sox previously split a twinbill with Baltimore on April 26.

"Well, it's not the best thing in the world when we have a doubleheader," manager Ozzie Guillen told the White Sox's official Web site. "I don't remember having a happy face after we (left) the last doubleheader. It's something you can't control."

Friday's postponement didn't affect the standings as Chicago remained one game ahead of second-place Minnesota, which has a rain-forced twinbill scheduled for Saturday in Baltimore.

Detroit's Justin Verlander and Chicago's John Danks had been the scheduled starters in the series opener, but will face off Sunday instead.

Struggling pitchers Kenny Rogers (9-13, 5.49 ERA) and Javier Vazquez (11-13, 4.29) will be on the mound in the first game on Saturday.

Rogers kicks off Detroit's final nine-game road trip, trying to help his team bounce back from Wednesday's 5-2 home loss to Oakland.

He returns after missing his start on Tuesday due to a sore hip, according to the team's official Web site.

The 43-year-old left-hander is 1-7 with an 8.50 ERA over his last eight starts, and has dropped his last three outings. He conceded six runs in two-plus innings - his shortest effort of the year - of a 7-1 home loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Sept. 4.

Rogers is 0-2 with a 6.33 ERA over his last five starts against the White Sox, including 0-1 with a 5.25 ERA in two outings this year.

Meanwhile, Vazquez is 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA in his last four outings for Chicago, and 1-5 with a 3.48 ERA over his last six home starts. On Tuesday, he gave up two runs over six innings of a 3-1 home loss to Toronto.

The right-hander is 1-3 with a 5.33 ERA in four starts against Detroit this year.

Zach Miner (8-4, 4.29) takes the ball for the Tigers in the nightcap. Detroit has won each of the right-hander's last four starts, although he gave up eight runs in 4 1-3 innings of a 14-8 home victory over Oakland on Monday.

Miner has won both starts against Chicago in 2008, posting a 2.25 ERA. He's 5-1 with a 4.33 ERA as a starter this year.

He will be opposed by Lance Broadway (1-0, 8.49), who gave up a homer in an inning of relief against Toronto on Tuesday.

The right-hander has allowed two runs and seven hits over 11 1-3 frames in winning his only two career starts, both over Kansas City.
