Pittsburgh at San Diego

Venue: Petco Park

The Pittsburgh Pirates put on an impressive display in their series opener with the San Diego Padres, getting contributions from their entire lineup.

San Diego, meanwhile, is reeling after its second offensive dud in as many days.

More offense from the Pirates could be on the way Tuesday night at Petco Park with Jesse Hahn taking the ball to make his major league debut for the Padres.

Pittsburgh (27-30) pounded out 16 hits and drew seven walks in a 10-3 victory Monday. Each starter reached base except for pitcher Charlie Morton, who struck out a career high-tying nine over five innings of two-run ball.

No. 8 hitter Jordy Mercer tied a personal best with four hits, including a home run, while Josh Harrison and Neil Walker were a combined 6 for 10 at the top of the order. Andrew McCutchen also hit his 15th double, extending his hitting streak at Petco Park to nine games.

The Pirates were 9 for 20 with runners in scoring position and are 35 for 111 (.315) in such situations while winning nine of 13. Monday's output with runners in scoring position was the club's best showing since going 10 for 21 in a 12-6 victory over Houston on July 17, 2010.

Pittsburgh forced the Padres to throw 249 pitches - their most ever in a nine-inning game and most in a National League nine-inning game since at least 1988.

"I think when we all get hot there's no telling what we can do," said Mercer, who came in slugging .384 for his career with 10 homers in 541 at-bats. "The sky's the limit for us because we can hit the ball out of the ballpark, we can run, we can do all sorts of stuff. It's just a matter of us all clicking together."

After scraping together two hits in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the White Sox, the Padres (26-32) followed with four singles and a double on Monday. San Diego's 187 runs (3.2 per game) and .224 batting average both rank last in the majors.

Nos. 3-5 hitters Carlos Quentin, Chase Headley and Yonder Alonso were a combined 0 for 11 in Monday's 4-hour, 4-minute blowout - the longest nine-inning game in Padres history.

Jesse Hahn (0-0. 0.00 ERA) figures to need more offensive support for a chance to win his first career start. With fellow starters Andrew Cashner and Robbie Erlin on the disabled list, the 24-year-old will be called up from Double-A San Antonio, where he went 2-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 10 games this season, including seven starts.

Manager Bud Black told the team's official website the right-hander is expected to throw about six innings or 90 pitches. Hahn yielded four hits and two walks over 8 2-3 scoreless innings of relief over five spring training appearances.

"We feel what we saw in spring training with Jesse was a major league arm, big league stuff, good head on his shoulders," Black said.

Though the Pirates have won all three of their games this season in which they've faced a rookie starter, the pitchers combined for a 1.96 ERA.

Pittsburgh will counter with Gerrit Cole (5-3, 3.80), who won for the second time in three starts Thursday despite a season-low 88 pitches. He allowed three runs over 6 1-3 innings in a 6-3 road victory over the Dodgers.

Cole split two starts against the Padres last season, allowing three runs over 12 innings. He struck out a career-high 12 in six innings in a 10-1 victory on Sept. 19.
