San Diego at Arizona

Venue: Chase Field
  •

After more than two months on the shelf, Andrew Cashner is ready to get back on the hill.

Cashner and the San Diego Padres continue a three-game road set against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who try to make it two in a row for just the second time this month Saturday night.

Cashner (2-6, 2.36) has been on the disabled list since June 23 due to soreness in his throwing shoulder. The right-hander, who has been limited to 12 starts, also missed time earlier in the year with an elbow issue.

"I have had some injuries and that's unfortunate, but the biggest thing for me now is taking the ball the rest of the season and showing them I'm healthy," Cashner told MLB's official website.

Cashner returns looking to snap an eight-start winless drought, a stretch during which he's gone 0-5 while receiving a combined nine runs of support. He made his third and final rehab start Monday, yielding three runs and four hits over five innings.

"I'm ready to go," he said. "My breaking ball was better, my sinker was very good, I threw some good changeups. Overall ... my pitch execution was very good."

Cashner is 2-1 with a 3.56 ERA in six starts against the Diamondbacks. Miguel Montero is 3 for 15 in their matchups and Aaron Hill is 1 for 6.

Arizona (54-75) had been outscored 29-11 during a season worst-tying six-game losing streak before winning 5-1 on Friday. Montero went 2 for 3 with a two-run homer and Josh Collmenter took a shutout into the ninth inning.

Arizona's only set of back-to-back wins this month came Aug. 8 and 9 against last-place Colorado.

The Padres (59-68) dropped to 2-6 on their 10-game road trip after going 0 for 2 with runners in scoring position. Yangervis Solarte and Alexi Amarista both had two hits but the rest of the team was 0 for 23.

"The story was their guy," manager Bud Black said of Collmenter. "We couldn't solve him. He pitched a good game and we couldn't square any balls up."

Will Venable is mired in a 4-for-29 slump and Yasmani Grandal is 2 for his last 18. Venable has singled twice in his last 21 at-bats against the Diamondbacks.

San Diego has dropped seven of 10 in the series this year, including three of four in Arizona.

The Diamondbacks give the ball to Vidal Nuno, who is 0-3 with a 3.72 ERA in eight starts since coming over from the New York Yankees in the Brandon McCarthy trade. The left-hander yielded two runs and struck out a season high-tying seven over seven innings in Monday's 5-4, 11-inning loss at Washington.

Arizona has lost all eight of Nuno's starts.

A San Diego area native, Nuno has never faced the Padres.

Montero is batting .375 with three homers and eight RBIs during a nine-game stretch against San Diego.

Hill could be back in the lineup after sitting out Friday. The struggling second baseman is batting .159 with just three extra-base hits over his last 19 games.

Despite winning three of four at Chase Field, the Diamondbacks are an NL-worst 26-39 at home.
