Seattle at Boston

Venue: Fenway Park

The Seattle Mariners understand how critical every game can be amid their push to reach the postseason for the first time in 13 years.

With Chris Young trying for a career-high 13th win, the visiting Mariners look to build on a thrilling comeback victory that left the Boston Red Sox in danger of dropping seven straight games Saturday.

Trailing 3-0 in the ninth Friday, Seattle (69-58) scored all its runs with two outs en route to a 5-3 victory. Austin Jackson's two-run double highlighted the inning for the Mariners, who snapped a nine-game skid at Boston (56-72).

"(Manager) Lloyd (McClendon) has said it all along ... 'trust your talents,'" Young told MLB's official website. "'Come out and play the game the right way because you're a good team.' I think we're starting to believe in that."

By improving to 4-3 on a nine-game trip, Seattle also moved one-half game ahead of Detroit for the second wild-card spot in the AL.

"You must win right now and you have to be ready every single day," said All-Star Robinson Cano, who had two hits with an RBI. "It's gone good so far and hopefully we continue playing the same way we've been playing."

A winner of three straight starts, Young (12-6, 3.07 ERA) is 7-2 with a 2.45 ERA in his last 12 outings and has allowed a run and six hits in 12 innings of the last two. He gave up four of those hits over six scoreless innings during an 8-1 win at Detroit on Sunday.

The right-hander is 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA against the Red Sox, but has not faced them since 2007 with San Diego. This will be his second appearance at Fenway Park, his first since 2004 for Texas.

David Ortiz and Yoenis Cespedes are a combined 1 for 11 with four strikeouts against Young, with the only hit an Ortiz homer.

With two hits Friday, Ortiz is 16 for 28 with four homers and nine RBIs in the last eight games.

Cespedes is batting .230 in 19 games since being traded to Boston, but has 16 RBIs after hitting a three-run homer off Felix Hernandez for his fourth with the Red Sox.

Boston's Brandon Workman (1-7, 4.26) has dropped seven straight decisions, including six consecutive starts. He posted a 6.04 ERA during a five-start stretch prior to allowing two runs in seven innings of a 4-2 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.

Skipping Workman's previous turn in the rotation might prove beneficial for the right-hander going forward.

"Obviously the added rest helped," manager John Farrell told MLB's official website. "I thought his stuff ticked up in terms of action, crispness, velocity."

In his only other start versus Seattle last season, Workman yielded a run and struck out nine in six innings of an 8-2 victory at Fenway.

Cano is batting .339 with 64 RBIs in 80 games at Boston.

Boston's Mike Napoli could return after missing three straight games with back spasms. He's 4 for 7 with a homer against the Mariners in 2014.
