Colorado at Arizona

Venue: Chase Field
  •

The Colorado Rockies have the opportunity to climb out of last place in the NL West by the time they leave Arizona on Sunday, but sweeping the Diamondbacks seems far-fetched considering their recent troubles at the plate.

Either injury-depleted Colorado or Arizona will avoid a fourth straight loss Friday night when the teams with the two worst records in the NL open a three-game series.

The Rockies (53-80) began a seven-game road trip with a 3-2 win over San Francisco on Monday despite having six hits. That number proved to be their highest in the series, as they totaled 10 hits the rest of the way - one Tuesday - and scored three times in dropping the final three meetings.

Colorado fell 4-1 on Thursday for its 26th loss in 30 road games.

"We just had a hard time scoring enough runs to win in this series," manager Walt Weiss said. "We didn't have a lot of opportunities."

The Rockies are playing without shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (hip surgery), outfielders Carlos Gonzalez (knee) and Michael Cuddyer (hamstring) and catcher Wilin Rosario (wrist). Those players finished Nos. 1-4 last season on the team in RBIs, combining for 315 with 92 home runs.

Arizona (55-78) was also shut down in its last game, managing six hits in eight innings against Clayton Kershaw in Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks opened an eight-game homestand with back-to-back wins over San Diego before dropping the finale of that series and both matchups with division-leading Los Angeles.

Those victories over the Padres are Arizona's only two in the last 11 games.

"It stinks. You want to get the job done, especially against a good ballclub like this," Mark Trumbo told MLB's official website.

The Diamondbacks will try to get back on track as they face rookie Christian Bergman (1-2, 6.75 ERA) for the first time. The right-hander returned Sunday from a two-month absence due to a fractured left thumb and beat Miami 7-4 for his first career win.

"I wouldn't say I was nervous, just kind of the excitement of being back out there," said Bergman, who lasted 6 1-3 innings after totaling 15 in his first three starts. "... I just kind of settled in and tried to attack the strike zone and get some quick innings."

He'll be opposed by Josh Collmenter (9-7, 4.05), who has a 6.00 ERA in two starts against Colorado this season but Arizona has rallied to win both behind 21 runs.

The right-hander entered last Friday's start with an 0-2 record and 8.50 ERA in his previous four outings, but he had one of the best performances of his career after manager Kirk Gibson had him skip his between-starts bullpen session.

Collmenter came within two outs of a complete game, limiting San Diego to an unearned run and four hits while tying a career high with eight strikeouts and not walking a batter in a 5-1 win.

"Give the arm a little break and we've been going at it quite a while now," Collmenter said. "It was just good to rest and be 100 percent."

The Rockies won four of the first five meetings this season before the Diamondbacks took the next six. Colorado ended that skid with a 5-3, 10-inning win at Arizona on Aug. 10.
