PHILADELPHIA -- After a long day of baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies were happy to break even.
Placido Polanco and Bobby Abreu drove in three runs apiece, leading Philadelphia to a 10-4 victory over the San Diego Padres and a doubleheader split Saturday.
"We needed the second game," Marlon Byrd said. "We came out there with determination and put up some big numbers."
Jake Peavy allowed two hits over seven shutout innings, and Phil Nevin homered and drove in four runs as San Diego won 6-4 in the opener. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the NL wild card-leading Phillies.
It was the first scheduled doubleheader at Veterans Stadium since Aug. 10, 1985, against St. Louis. The Phillies are moving into a new ballpark next season.
"It was a long night, but we'll take it," manager Larry Bowa said.
Bowa held his breath when star first baseman Jim Thome appeared to reinjure his groin running the bases in the seventh inning of the nightcap. Thome finished the game, but Bowa said he would not start Sunday.
"With more than 50 games left, we're not going to chance anything with Thome," Bowa said. "We'll sit him and he'll be back in there on Tuesday (at Colorado)."
Polanco went 4-for-7 with two walks in the doubleheader, including two hits and three runs scored in the nightcap. In his last four games, he's hitting .571 with eight hits, six runs and seven RBIs.
Nevin went 3-for-9 on the day. He has hit safely in eight of 10 games since coming off the disabled list July 23. He had been sidelined since March 7 after surgery on his left shoulder.
"Phil is way ahead of where I thought he would be," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said.
The Phillies went ahead in the second game with a four-run fourth. Todd Pratt drew a leadoff walk and Tomas Perez followed with a single off starter Joe Roa (1-3). Byrd singled home Pratt to tie it at 3.
Polanco hit a two-run triple into the right-field corner, and Thome capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.
Philadelphia added four runs in the eighth off Mike Matthews. Byrd had an RBI single, Abreu a two-run single and Ricky Ledee an RBI single.
"Bobby has been getting some huge two-out hits for us lately," Bowa said.
Pratt scored three runs in the second game, matching a career high.
Philadelphia's Carlos Silva made his first major league start after 111 relief appearances. Trailing 3-2, he left for a pinch-hitter in the fourth before the Phillies surged ahead.
Rheal Cormier (3-0) pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts for the win.
Miguel Ojeda homered off Jose Mesa in the ninth to make it 10-4, his fourth of the year. Dan Plesac entered with the bases loaded and retired Ryan Klesko and Nevin to end it.
Roa, who started for the Phillies in their home opener, gave up six runs on six hits in 3 1-3 innings. After being designated for assignment by Philadelphia on May 27, he signed with Colorado. He was claimed off waivers by the Padres on July 24.
"He hasn't been pitching a lot and he's a little rusty," Bochy said. "He battled out there, though."
Abreu and Polanco each had an RBI single in the first two innings.
Gary Matthews Jr. doubled home a run for San Diego in the second and Mark Loretta's RBI groundout tied it at 2 in the third. Ojeda's RBI single gave the Padres a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
Peavy (9-8) was sharp en route to his first win since June 28. He allowed Byrd's double in the first inning and Polanco's single in the third before giving way to the bullpen in the eighth. Peavy walked four and struck out five, throwing 114 pitches.
Tyler Houston and Jimmy Rollins each hit an RBI single in the ninth for the Phillies. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt by reliever Jay Witasick led to two more runs, including Ledee's sacrifice fly.
Nevin hit a three-run shot - his third of the season - off All-Star Randy Wolf (11-6) in the fifth. Wolf got the first two outs before giving up singles to Sean Burroughs and Loretta. Nevin hit an 0-2 pitch to the right-center stands to increase San Diego's lead to 6-0.
The Padres, shut out on three hits by Kevin Millwood in Friday's series opener, took a 2-0 lead in the first off Wolf, who walked two of the first three batters. Nevin lined an RBI single to right, scoring Matthews. Loretta also scored on the play when right fielder Abreu mishandled the ball for an error.
The Padres padded the lead to 3-0 in the second on Rollins' error at shortstop. Lou Merloni was safe at second on a steal attempt when the ball tipped off Rollins' glove. Brian Buchanan, who led off with a walk, scored easily from third.
Wolf never found his rhythm and lasted just five innings. He allowed five hits and six runs -- four earned -- with four walks and three strikeouts.
"Both games were long, it was a long day," Bochy said.

Byrd extended his career-high hitting streak to 15 games, also a team best this season. ... Nevin is hitting .625 (10-for-16) with three homers and nine RBIs lifetime against Wolf. ... The Phillies made three errors in the doubleheader and have 15 in their last 12 games. ... Silva's second-inning single was his first major league hit.
