SEATTLE -- Tim Hudson's teammates bailed him out.
Jermaine Dye hit a two-run double in the ninth inning after Hudson ran into trouble in the seventh, leading the Oakland Athletics to a 7-4 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.
The rally spoiled a dramatic comeback by the Mariners, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. Pinch-hitter Dave Hansen hit a three-run homer in the seventh to tie it at 4.
"It was a weird game," Hudson said. "I felt like I was in control, but it goes to show this game is crazy. Some things can happen and the next thing you know, they're back in the game."
Oakland pulled it out in the ninth. Eric Byrnes drew a leadoff walk from Seattle reliever Mike Myers (0-1). Eric Chavez, who led off the fourth with a homer to make it 2-0, singled to right.
"My teammates, man, they picked me up," Hudson said.
Mariners manager Bob Melvin turned to reliever Shigetoshi Hasegawa, who allowed only two hits to Dye in 15 previous at-bats. The A's slugger hit the first pitch into the left-field corner to make it 6-4.
"I was just looking for something to hit," Dye said. "I knew I was probably going to get a slider. I wanted to be aggressive in that situation. I was able to hook one down the line."
Arthur Rhodes pitched the ninth against his former team, earning his sixth save in seven chances.
"That was special to him, believe me," Oakland manager Ken Macha said.
Hudson (3-0) is 11-5 lifetime against Seattle, winning five of his past six. He beat the Mariners on April 10, and his 69 wins the past four years are second in the majors to Randy Johnson's 70.
Hudson wasn't in top form this time, though, breezing for stretches and then having control problems. He walked only one batter but hit Edgar Martinez, John Olerud and Raul Ibanez with pitches.
"I thought maybe we should get a warning," said Melvin, who had a talk with umpire Rob Drake after Ibanez was hit. "Several more were in there where we were dancing out of there."
Hudson, who had hit only one batter all season, allowed four runs and eight hits with four strikeouts. He's been working on a cutter that ran away against Olerud and Ibanez, he said. A sinker bopped Martinez.
"I wasn't trying to hit those guys. Everybody knows that I wasn't," Hudson said. "Hitting three guys in a game, I didn't like the fact I'd done it."
He got away with his control problems because the Mariners hit into five double plays. He lost his shutout bid in the seventh, though, when Olerud singled to drive in Ibanez -- on base after being hit by a pitch -- to trim Seattle's deficit to 4-1.
Then Hansen lined an 0-2 pitch high into the right-field stands. Rich Aurilia was also on base after a one-out single.
"I don't think you can go up there knowing you can hit a homer, and you don't want to go up there thinking you're going to make an out," Hansen said. "I tried to be patient and put a good swing on it."
It was Hansen's 15th homer as a pinch-hitter, moving him into seventh place on the career list. One more and he'll tie Gates Brown, Smoky Burgess and Willie McCovey for No. 4.
Seattle starter Gil Meche threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and six hits with four strikeouts and five walks.

- Before the Mariners scored in the seventh, Hudson set a career high with 21 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. His previous best was 20.
- Oakland SS Marco Scutaro, hitting .388 coming in, extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the fourth.
- Hansen is 2-for-4 as a pinch-hitter this season.
- Seattle has hit into five double plays in a game four times. The last was July 12, 1980, at Minnesota.
- All six games this season between Seattle and Oakland have been decided in the seventh inning or later.
