Cubs 6, Brewers 5 (12 innings)

CHICAGO -- Todd Hollandsworth feels he gets more comfortable at the plate as the game goes on.

That paid off for the Cubs in the 12th inning Sunday when he hit a run-scoring single through a drawn-in infield to give Chicago a 6-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

"Honestly, for some reason I'm probably more nervous when the game starts than in the situation there," Hollandsworth said. "For some reason, I seem to relax, just really bear down and focus."

Jeromy Burnitz hit a triple off the left-center field wall with one out in the 12th against Derrick Turnbow (0-1), the sixth Milwaukee pitcher. After an intentional walk to Derrek Lee, Hollandsworth delivered.

"(The pitch) was down and away and he just slapped it over and through the hole," Turnbow said. "It just happens sometimes."

Reliever Glendon Rusch (2-0) pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed three hits and struck out four.

"I was in a jam every inning today it seemed like," Rusch said. "It was great to weasel my way out of all of them and give us a chance to win."

The Cubs scored three runs off Milwaukee reliever Tommy Phelps to tie it at 5 in the sixth inning. Phelps gave up hits to the first three batters of the inning, and was removed after Hollandsworth hit a run-scoring single.

Ricky Bottalico relieved and hit Michael Barrett to load the bases, and the Cubs then scored two runs on a groundout and an infield single.

The runs were the first allowed by the Brewers' bullpen this year after 12 2/3 scoreless innings.

Bottalico, Matt Wise and Jorge De La Rosa didn't allow a run in five innings Sunday.

"Our bullpen did a great job today," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "Ricky Bottalico, Matt Wise and Jorge De La Rosa were all very good. "(Phelps) just didn't have it today."

Chicago starter Greg Maddux allowed four runs -- three earned -- and nine hits, including two homers, in five innings. The Cubs right-hander entered the game 10-2 with a 1.45 ERA against the Brewers, but Milwaukee touched him for single runs in four of the first five innings.

"It could have been worse I guess," Maddux said. "I'm not happy pitching only five innings, but if you pitch better you get to stay in longer."

Chicago's Aramis Ramirez had three doubles and an RBI. Burnitz, Neifi Perez and Corey Patterson also drove in runs for the Cubs.

Milwaukee's Junior Spivey, Lyle Overbay and Damian Miller each hit solo home runs. Spivey and Miller each added two singles.

Brewers starter Victor Santos pitched five strong innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

Notes

De La Rosa struck out five in the ninth and 10th innings. ... Cubs RHP Mark Prior threw 30 pitches from the Wrigley Field mound before the game.
