Willis improves to 4-0 as Marlins take down Reds

CBS wire reports

MIAMI -- Dontrelle Willis likes complete games. He likes wins even more.

Willis won his fourth straight start to begin the season, and Juan Encarnacion's two-run single helped the Florida Marlins to a 4-2 victory Saturday over the Cincinnati Reds.

Willis has two complete games this season and two outings that lasted six innings.

"We're winning -- I get satisfaction when we're shaking hands," Willis said. "It's great to throw a complete game, but it's also great when your team has your back."

Guillermo Mota struck out slumping Ken Griffey Jr. with runners at second and third to end it, preserving Florida's eighth victory in 11 games. Griffey went 0-for-4, dropping his batting average to .200 with no homers and three RBI. He's hitless in his last 17 at-bats.

Griffey declined to comment after the game.

Willis (4-0) fanned seven in six innings and gave up two runs, six hits and two walks. His ERA rose from 1.13 to 1.50, but he improved to 7-0 lifetime in April.

"He's not giving in," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. "When he gets into trouble, he backs off instead of trying to overthrow, and I think that might have gotten him into trouble in the past."

Nate Bump, Matt Perisho and Todd Jones combined for two scoreless innings before Mota pitched the ninth for his second save. He earned Florida's first save of the season on Friday night.

Cincinnati right-hander Matt Belisle (1-2) allowed four runs -- three earned -- and seven hits in five innings. He also hit two batters with pitches.

An error by left fielder Wily Mo Pena helped the Marlins take a 2-0 lead in the first.

"One play in left field put Belisle in a hole," Reds manager Dave Miley said. "But he kept battling, making pitches when he had to. He did what Aaron Harang did (Friday night), he gave us a chance to win the game."

Felipe Lopez homered for the Reds, who lost their third straight.

Lopez's two-run shot in the sixth made the score 4-2. Lopez, who entered in the third inning, sent Willis' 0-2 pitch over the scoreboard in left.

Florida built a 4-0 lead in the third when Encarnacion's two-out single scored Luis Castillo and Carlos Delgado. The hit gave Encarnacion 19 RBI.

Before the game, McKeon complimented Encarnacion for having a better sense of the strike zone.

"Normally, through time, you just get a better grasp of the strike zone," Encarnacion said. "That helps throughout your career."

After Juan Pierre was hit by a pitch to start the first inning, Castillo lined a single to left. The ball got by Pena, allowing Pierre to score and Castillo to reach third. Delgado followed with an RBI single, his first of two hits.

  • Pena left with a stiff left quadriceps muscle in the second inning. "I felt it running to first on the hit," said Pena, who singled in the second. "They tell me it's nothing big."
  • Pierre led off the fifth by reaching on catcher's interference after he swung and his bat hit Jason LaRue's glove.
  • Attendance was 23,623, a drop from Friday night's 30,519.
  • Cincinnati is 4-for-37 in its last five games with runners in scoring position.
