SAN DIEGO -- Damian Jackson couldn't have asked for a better return to the big leagues.

Jackson caught a morning flight from Portland, arrived in San Diego in enough time to see his kids before heading to the ballpark, then hit an RBI double with two outs in the eighth inning to give the Padres a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.

"I'll be looking forward to my own bed tonight," said Jackson, one of the last players cut by the Padres in spring training.

With two shortstops on the disabled list, the Padres purchased Jackson's contract from Triple-A Portland on Tuesday. He started and went 2-for-4, including his double that scored Sean Burroughs with the go-ahead run.

"It felt great," Jackson said. "That's all I want to do is help the team win in some kind of way. Today I just happened to get a big hit. Tomorrow it might just be cheerleading. But who cares?"

Trevor Hoffman pitched a scoreless ninth for his 399th career save and sixth in eight chances this year. He can become the third reliever in history to reach 400.

Ryan Klesko opened the Padres' eighth with a walk off former San Diego reliever Jay Witasick (0-1) and was sacrificed by Ramon Hernandez. Burroughs was intentionally walked and ended up on second after Klesko was thrown out trying to steal third. Jackson then doubled to left.

"That's quite a splash he made coming back," manager Bruce Bochy said. "That's what we were missing, was that big hit, and we got it from him tonight."

Akinori Otsuka (1-2) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win.

The game featured an unlikely pitching duel between No. 5 starters, although neither got the decision. Colorado's Jamey Wright and San Diego's Tim Redding each allowed just one run - both on homers - and neither got a decision.

Wright came in with a road ERA of 1.35, and held the Padres scoreless until Klesko hit a 414-foot homer down the right-field line on a 3-0 pitch with one out in the sixth. It was Klesko's fourth.

Wright struck out nine, a season-high for a Rockies pitcher, in 6 1-3 innings. He allowed eight hits and walked two.

After losing his first four starts with the Padres, Redding went a season-high seven innings, holding the Rockies to four hits while striking out five and walking one.

"We've been looking for a quality start there," Bochy said. "We certainly got one today, and we needed it because their guy was on. It was a terrific job, a big shot in the arm for us and for him. It's really his win the way he pitched."

With the no-decision, the Padres' No. 5 spot remains winless in 14 starts since Ismael Valdez was traded to the Florida Marlins on July 31.

Redding allowed Todd Greene's homer into the first row of the second deck in left field with one out in the second. It was Greene's second.

The Rockies lost their seventh straight game.

"We need to start putting together wins or it is not going to be a very fun June, July, August and September," Wright said. "Not playing for anything that early in the season, it is tough to stay focused. We are not out of it yet, but we have to do some soul-searching and come up with some victories in a hurry or else it is going to get out of hand."

San Diego's Brian Giles came into the game hitting just .193 and continued to struggle. He went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

Notes: To make room for Jackson, the Padres designated OF Adam Hyzdu for assignment. Hyzdu hit a three-run double in San Diego's 5-4 win Monday night. ... Padres SS Khalil Greene started a rehab assignment at Class A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday night and went 0-for-2 and was hit by a pitch. If all goes well, he will rejoin the Padres on Monday in Cincinnati.
