Ramirez's grand slam lifts Red Sox to seventh in a row

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
  •

PHILADELPHIA -- Manny Ramirez is most dangerous with the bases loaded.

Ramirez hit his 19th grand slam and drove in five runs, leading the Boston Red Sox over the Philadelphia Phillies 12-8 Sunday for their season-high seventh consecutive victory.

Ramirez tied Hall of Famer Eddie Murray for second place on the career grand slams list. Lou Gehrig holds the record with 23.

Boston blew a seven-run lead, but Mark Bellhorn hit a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning. Bellhorn finished with three hits, including a homer, three RBI and four runs scored for the AL East-leading Red Sox, who completed their first undefeated road trip (6-0) since going 9-0 in 1977.

"The last 10 to 12 days everybody is seeing the ball well and it spreads through the lineup," said Bellhorn, who entered 2-for-16 on the trip.

Ramirez gave the Red Sox a 7-0 lead in the fourth with his slam off starter Brett Myers. His 19th homer of the season landed in the first row of seats in right field. He appeared to be surprised when the ball cleared the fence, raising both arms in celebration as he rounded first base.

"Manny started out slow and we all said it's going to be fun when he gets hot. And he's getting hot," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.

Ramirez went 5-for-14 with three homers and nine RBI in the series.

Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell each homered and drove in three runs for Philadelphia, which lost for the ninth time in 12 games. After a 12-1 homestand in early June, the Phillies finished this homestand 1-5.

"We just need to forget about it and move on," Abreu said.

After Philadelphia rallied from a 7-0 deficit to tie the score at 8-8 in the seventh, Boston scored four runs in its next at-bat.

Johnny Damon started the rally with a bunt single off Rheal Cormier (2-2). Bellhorn hit the next pitch off the center-field fence, scoring Damon for a 9-8 lead. David Ortiz followed with a single, and Ramirez lifted a sacrifice fly to center. One batter later, Jason Varitek hit a two-run homer, his 13th.

Mike Timlin (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

With the Phillies down 8-1 in the fifth, Abreu hit a two-run double and Burrell followed with a two-run homer, his 16th. Philadelphia tied it with three runs in the seventh, capped by Jim Thome's sacrifice fly.

"We stayed after them and that's a good sign," said manager Charlie Manuel, who held a closed-door meeting with his team before the game.

Myers was roughed up for seven runs and eight hits in four innings. In his last two starts, he has yielded 13 runs and 18 hits in 7 1/3 innings as his ERA has climbed from 2.19 to 3.18.

"I felt like the plate didn't have any corners," Myers said. "If you try to make an adjustment to that and come back over the plate, with that club, it's not going to work."

Notes

  • Manuel was ejected in the fifth for arguing balls and strikes with plate umpire Gary Darling. It was Manuel's third ejection of the season.
  • Damon extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and Ortiz improved his streak to 10.
  • The Red Sox finished interleague play with a 12-6 mark, a club record for interleague wins in a season.
  • Boston never trailed in the three-game series.
