Rookie comes up big in first start as D-Backs down Cubs

CHICAGO -- Conor Jackson won't soon forget his first start in the big leagues.

The 23-year-old rookie collected his first two major-league hits, including a go-ahead double in the eighth inning, as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 Saturday.

"I told him the baseball gods usually cut you a break in your first game," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "I might have been lying a little bit."

Starting at first base, Jackson hit an RBI double to left in the eighth inning off Roberto Novoa to score Troy Glaus and break a 2-all tie. He singled in the second inning for his first hit in his second at-bat.

"I'll definitely cherish this a long time," said Jackson, who was called up from Triple-A Tucson after Wednesday's game. "It's exciting to be here, big-league stadium, making my first start. I can't really ask for anything else."

Novoa (3-4) gave up a double to Glaus and intentionally walked Shawn Green before surrendering Jackson's line drive.

Glendon Rusch replaced Novoa, intentionally walking pinch-hitter Tony Clark to load the bases. He then struck out Koyie Hill and got Quinton McCracken to fly out to end the inning.

Lance Cormier (7-1) replaced Michael Gosling with two men on and one out in the sixth. He got Michael Barrett to ground out before walking Neifi Perez, who had doubled twice already, to load the bases. Cormier struck out rookie Matt Murton to end the inning.

"I made it a tough spot for Lance, but he came in and was just fantastic for that inning and the next," Gosling said. "Hey, great win. We'll take them anyway we can get them."

Cormier struck out three in 1 2/3 innings to get the win. Greg Aquino pitched the final two innings for his first save of the year.

The Cubs wasted a great scoring opportunity in the sixth inning when Derrek Lee got caught stealing third with no outs. Lee had reached second on a two-base throwing error by Royce Clayton to start the inning.

Aramis Ramirez, who was hitting when Lee tried his steal, singled and Jeromy Burnitz doubled off Gosling, but both were left stranded by Cormier. Ramirez, who didn't start Friday because of a strained right quad, couldn't score on Burnitz's hit to right.

"We didn't want to pinch-run for him right there because he was going to hit again," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said of Ramirez. "Especially hitting behind D-Lee. ... He tried to score."

Baker said Lee, who has 12 steals this season, always has the green light, but "if you're stealing third with no outs, you've got to make it."

"I thought I could make it," said Lee, who leads the majors with a .359 average and is tied for the lead with 32 home runs. "It didn't work out, it wasn't a good play. The infielders, they weren't holding me on, so I thought I could make it. I guess I didn't get a good enough jump. ... You've got to be safe there."

Troy Glaus hit his 21st homer to lead off the sixth against Rich Hill to tie the game. Hill thought a previous curveball to Glaus was a strike. Hill's ensuing 2-2 pitch missed completely.

"That ball was supposed to be down and away and when you miss over belt-high, usually something is going to happen," Hill said.

The Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Perez hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Alex Cintron's error.

Arizona tied it at 1 in the fourth when Koyie Hill hit a two-out double off Rich Hill that scored Green from first. Rich Hill walked Green to start the inning.

Perez had an RBI double in the second, scoring Barrett, who doubled before him.

Notes

  • Rich Hill gave up two runs on five hits and two walks in six innings, in his second major-league start. Baker said he will stay in the rotation.
  • Gosling gave up one earned run on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
  • Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Kerry Wood and Nomar Garciaparra should be activated off the disabled list Friday, along with reliever Scott Williamson. Wood, recently on the DL with inflammation in his pitching shoulder, will move to the bullpen.
  • Murton received his first intentional walk in the majors, getting passed so Gosling could face the pitcher Hill with a man on second and two outs in the second inning.
  • Arizona made three errors.
  • Jackson was called up to replace Jose Cruz Jr.
