Indians' big sixth inning take care of Tigers

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
  •

DETROIT -- The Cleveland Indians all figured out Detroit starter Nate Robertson about the same time on Friday night.

Casey Blake and Coco Crisp both homered and drove in three runs as Cleveland scored all of its runs in the sixth inning and beat the Tigers 9-6 on Friday night.

Blake and Jhonny Peralta both had three of Cleveland's 16 hits. The Indians sent 15 batters to the plate and had 10 hits in the sixth - both season highs for an inning -- when they took a 9-1 lead.

"We made him adjust and were actually getting the pitches you can hit," Crisp said. "He made a couple of mistakes and we were able to hit them."

C.C. Sabathia (7-9) broke a five-game losing streak, allowing five runs and five hits in six-plus innings, walking three and striking out five. His last win was on July 1.

"It's been a long time since I've been able to throw strikes and pitch like that," Sabathia said.

Bob Howry pitched the ninth for his third save in as many opportunities.

Rondell White and Brandon Inge homered for Detroit.

Robertson (5-10) took the loss. He gave up six runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings.

Detroit scored the first run of the game in the fourth on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Ivan Rodriguez. It scored Carlos Guillen, who led off the inning with a single, the Tigers' first hit of the game.

Then came the big inning.

Robertson had allowed four hits over the first five innings. He gave up hits to the first six batters in the sixth.

"I felt good, they just started hitting the ball," Robertson said. "I wasn't falling behind any hitters but did get some pitches up. I just couldn't stop it."

Blake led off with a homer, his 13th, and then added a two-run single in the inning. Grady Sizemore followed Blake's homer with a triple and Crisp then hit a two-run homer, his ninth. He added an RBI single later in the inning. Victor Martinez's RBI single drove Robertson from the mound.

He was replaced by Roman Colon, who allowed a single to Jose Hernandez, the Indians' seventh straight hit. Colon then struck out Ronnie Belliard, but Aaron Boone followed with an RBI single.

"Hitting is contagious," said Cleveland bench coach Robby Thompson, who was managing while manager Eric Wedge served a one-game suspension. "When that happens, you don't want to be the guy going up there making outs."

Peralta was credited with an RBI on third baseman Inge's bases loaded error.

The Indians scored 10 runs in the third inning against Arizona on June 17.

It was the most runs and hits the Tigers have given up in an inning this season.

"I don't know exactly what happened," Detroit manager Alan Trammell said. "We just couldn't stop them. It was an inning you wanted to forget."

Detroit came back with five runs in the seventh.

White led off with a homer, Craig Monroe doubled in a run to chase Sabathia and Inge hit a three-run homer off David Riske.

Notes

Four Indians were suspended because of a July 29 beanball incident in Seattle. Starting RHP Kevin Millwood was suspended for five games, Riske for four and Wedge and Thompson for one each. Thompson will serve his suspension on Saturday night. All were fined as well. ... Rodriguez was suspended for four games and fined an undisclosed amount, stemming from an argument with umpire Ted Barrett on July 30 in Oakland. Rodriguez is appealing the suspension.
