ATLANTA -- The San Diego Padres looked anything but tired.

Joe Randa and Mark Sweeney hit three-run homers and the Padres matched their season high with 20 hits in a 12-7 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.

The Padres didn't show signs of a lack of sleep after a late flight from Florida had them reaching their Atlanta hotel about 4:30 a.m. Friday.

"I guess we've got to stay up 'till five in the morning," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said.

The Padres improved to 4-0 this season against Atlanta, moved within a game of .500 (60-61) and pushed their lead in the NL West to four games over second-place Arizona. They swept a three-game series against the Braves in San Diego on May 16-18.

Asked about the possibility of facing the Braves in the playoffs, Bochy said, "That'd be nice. We'll take any matchup, just like I'm sure they would."

Brian Giles was 4-for-5 with a walk for San Diego.

The Braves still lead the NL East by 4½ games over Philadelphia and Florida, but they are only 5-5 on their 12-game homestand.

Mike Hampton (5-3) gave up 11 hits and seven runs -- both season highs -- in 3 1/3 innings.

Hampton was making only his second start since his third stint on the disabled list this season, this time for a strained lower back. But Braves manager Bobby Cox wasn't interested in hearing talk that Hampton might be rusty.

"There shouldn't be any rust, not now," Cox said.

Hampton didn't stick around to talk to reporters.

It was the second straight night Atlanta's starter failed to get through four innings. John Thomson, also returning from a long stay on the disabled list, gave up eight hits and seven runs in 3 2/3 innings in Thursday night's 7-4 loss to Los Angeles.

"I look at it like they're both a little rusty," said Braves first baseman Adam LaRoche, who was 4-for-5. "They've missed a bunch of innings.

"It's not a great time to work out some kinks but it's not a terrible time, either."

Randa's homer, his 14th, capped a six-run fourth and gave the Padres an 8-3 lead.

Braves rookie Jeff Francoeur was 3-for-5, including an RBI double in the sixth, and Julio Franco added a pinch-hit, two-run single later in the inning as the Braves pulled within 9-6.

LaRoche's third hit, a seventh-inning single off reliever Scott Linebrink, drove in Marcus Giles to cut the lead to 9-7. Sweeney, a pinch hitter, hit his three-run homer off Dan Kolb in the eighth.

"We needed it," Sweeney said. "We understand how they play here, too. We need to score as many runs as we can."

The Padres had 20 hits in a 15-inning game against Arizona on April 29.

Chan Ho Park (2-1) gave up six hits and five runs in 5 1/3 innings. He has given up five or more earned runs in three of his four starts since coming to San Diego in a July 29 trade that sent Phil Nevin to Texas.

Hampton was pulled with one out in the fourth. Randa followed with the three-run homer off reliever Jim Brower.

The Padres scored in the second inning on three straight singles by Xavier Nady, Miguel Olivo and Park.

The Braves got three runs in the second on Rafael Furcal's double with the bases loaded past Ryan Klesko to the left field wall. Furcal was thrown out trying to return to second base.

The Padres made it 3-2 in the third when Giles doubled and scored on Klesko's single.

The Padres sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth. Robert Fick, Mark Loretta and Giles had consecutive RBI singles before Randa's homer.

Notes

For the second straight start, Hampton gave up a season high in hits. On Sunday, he allowed nine in a win over Arizona. ... Park's RBI was his first of the season. ... The Braves' previous high for hits allowed this season was 17 on June 29 at Florida. ... Francoeur is hitting .370.
