Diamondbacks 8, Rockies 5

DENVER -- Troy Glaus won't take credit for his recent success. He blames the opposing pitchers.

"Any time you are having success at the plate, you are hitting the pitchers' mistakes," Glaus said. "The last four or five days I have been doing that."

Glaus hit his 32nd homer on a pitch over the middle of the plate and drove in two runs, Shawn Green had three hits and a home run, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 8-5 Saturday night.

Glaus is hitting .308 over his last 27 games.

"I'm not trying to hit doubles or home runs or anything like that," said Glaus, who is third in home runs among big league third basemen. "I'm just putting the bat on mistakes and hitting it hard."

Kelly Stinnett and Chad Tracy also connected for the Diamondbacks. Conor Jackson added a two-run single.

"We have lived and died by the homer at times this year," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "Right now we are living by it."

The Diamondbacks have hit three or more home runs in each of the last three games. Home runs have accounted for 16 of their 22 runs over that span.

Claudio Vargas (9-8) was the beneficiary, allowing five runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings to win for the fifth time in seven decisions. Vargas was claimed off waivers from the Washington Nationals on June 3 and is 9-5 since coming to the Diamondbacks.

Jose Valverde got the final four outs for his seventh save in nine chances.

Zach Day (1-3) worked the first five innings, allowing six runs and nine hits. Cory Sullivan hit his third home run of the year for the Rockies, who lost their fourth straight.

"He wasn't sharp, getting only five groundball outs in the 27 batters he faced," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "Zach was spinning the ball to the hitters instead of sinking it."

Colorado took a 2-0 lead on Sullivan's two-run homer in the first inning. Glaus and Green homered on consecutive pitches in the second to tie it at 2-all.

"Pitches were left up on both home runs," Day said. "They just didn't sink."

The Diamondbacks took a 5-2 lead with a three-run third. Craig Counsell tripled and scored on an infield single by Glaus, and Jackson drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single.

Arizona added an unearned run in the fourth when Clint Barmes booted Glaus' grounder behind the bag at second, allowing Vargas to score.

The Rockies closed to 6-5 in the seventh with five consecutive two-out hits, including run-scoring singles by Luis Gonzalez, pinch-hitter Jorge Piedra and Barmes.

Stinnett and Tracy each hit solo home runs off David Cortes in the eighth inning.

"We put some good at-bats together today," Glaus said. "We took some walks and moved runners, and we put key hits together and scored runs."

Notes

The Diamondbacks hit back-to-back homers for the ninth time this year. ... Vargas improved to 3-0 lifetime against Colorado. ... Day hasn't won since April 20. ... Garrett Atkins has a 15-game hitting streak.
