Devil Rays 10, Blue Jays 8

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

TORONTO -- Carl Crawford's banner night had the perfect ending: a Tampa Bay win.

Crawford had a career-high five hits, scored five runs and stole four bases to help the Devil Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-8 Wednesday night.

Crawford homered and went 5-for-5, tying the team record for hits in a game previously set by Julio Lugo on June 24, 2004, at Toronto. He set team records for runs and stolen bases.

"It's probably my best game. It had a home run in it, we won the game, all that, so it probably was my best game," Crawford said.

Crawford was especially happy about five hits.

"That was cool," he said.

Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon raved about his left fielder.

"It's one of the best single performances I think I've ever seen in regard to all facets of the game," Maddon said. "He was the dominant story tonight. All the things he can do -- he did."

Down 7-5 in the seventh, Ty Wigginton hit a sacrifice fly before Toby Hall hit a two-run homer off Jason Frasor (1-1) to give Tampa Bay the lead.

Wigginton added a two-run homer off Scott Schoeneweis in the ninth. He finished 3-for-4 with four RBI.

Shawn Camp (2-0) got the last two outs of the sixth for the win. Tyler Walker worked 1 1/3 innings for his ninth save in 10 chances.

Toronto starter Josh Towers (1-8) lasted just 1 2/3 innings, giving up four runs and six hits. His ERA rose to 9.00. The Blue Jays outrighted Towers and optioned shortstop Russ Adams to Triple-A Syracuse after the game.

"We are going to throw the best people out there every night," Toronto manager John Gibbons said.

The usually talkative Towers declined to comment. He cleared waivers earlier in the week.

Adams was sent down because nine of his team-leading 10 errors have been throwing errors to first. Gibbons said he'll play some second base at Syracuse.

"It will be a time for me to go down there and clear my head," Adams said. "I don't doubt my abilities. I've been doing this long enough to know what my abilities are. It came to a point where I lost a little trust. It's something that doesn't fly over too well at this level. It's something that I've got to get worked out."

He said he was OK with playing some second base.

Lugo led off the first with a single, stole second and advanced to third on Crawford's base hit. Lugo came around to score on Jonny Gomes' sacrifice fly. Aubrey Huff added an RBI single to make it 2-0 Devil Rays.

Crawford hit a two-run homer off Towers in the second to give Tampa Bay a 4-0 lead.

Lyle Overbay's run-scoring base hit and Alex Rios' two-run single cut it to 4-3 lead in the bottom half.

Wigginton hit an RBI single in the fifth, but Hillenbrand homered off Casey Fossum in the bottom half.

Aaron Hill tied it at 5 with a solo shot off the foul screen in the sixth and Toronto scored two more runs in the inning on Camp's throwing error to first.

Hill homered for the first time since Aug. 9, 2005, against Detroit. ... Towers has allowed 13 homers in just 45 innings. Last season, he gave up 24 homers in 208 2/3 innings en route to a career-best 13 wins and 3.71 ERA. He signed a two-year, $5.2 million contract in the offseason.
