LOS ANGELES -- Eric Gagne's return to the mound for the first time in nearly a year wasn't enough to save the Los Angeles Dodgers from defeat.

Aaron Rowand's go-ahead two-run double highlighted a five-run seventh inning, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-6 victory over Los Angeles, which had its seven-game home winning streak snapped Friday night.

A sellout crowd of 55,142 roared when Gagne made his first appearance since last June 12. The 2003 Cy Young Award winner came off the disabled list Thursday after having two right elbow surgeries in less than a year. He pitched a hitless inning, hitting Rowand with two outs and walking David Bell.

"It was exciting. It was fun. The fans were pumped and I was pumped," Gagne said. "My legs were shaking. I was nervous and anxious, but the fans got me going again. It was good to get the first one out of the way. It would have been nice to have a save, but I'll take an inning of work here and go from there."

Geoff Geary (2-0) allowed one hit in one inning of relief and struck out one. Tom Gordon pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 17 tries, getting Joel Guzman to hit into a game-ending double play with two runners on.

"I did my job and handed the ball to the next guy, who did his job," said Geary, who made 13 pitches. "My goal is to get out of the inning as fast as possible."

Chase Utley went 4-for-4, tying a career high, with a home run and scored four runs.

"I got a couple decent pitches and was there on the ball and found a few holes," he said.

The Phillies turned a 5-3 deficit into an 8-5 lead in the seventh. They tied it on a two-run, broken bat bloop single by Pat Burrell off Danys Baez (3-3).

Rowand greeted Takashi Saito with a double down the right field line, giving the Phillies a 7-5 lead after a walk to Ryan Howard. David Bell followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-5.

"It's not just one guy," Rowand said. "It's everybody working together. This team doesn't give up. When we get down, nobody panics. We've battled all year long."

The Phillies built a 3-0 lead against starter Jae Seo, who gave up solo homers to Utley in the first and Howard in the fourth. In between was an RBI double by Bobby Abreu in the third.

The Dodgers rallied on the efforts of three rookies and veteran Nomar Garciaparra.

They got to 3-2 on Willy Aybar's two-run double in the fourth.

Matt Kemp, who had a three-run homer Thursday night, homered in the fifth against Ryan Madson to tie the game at three. The Dodgers took a 4-3 lead on Garciaparra's single to center that scored Rafael Furcal, who had walked and stole second. Garciaparra took second on the throw home.

The same scoring play transpired when Guzman singled to center for his first major league hit, driving in Garciaparra for a 5-3 lead.

Los Angeles trailed 8-6 in the eighth on Sandy Alomar Jr.'s two-out double down the left-field line.

Baez gave up five runs on three hits and two walks without getting an out.

Seo gave up three runs on five hits in four innings, struck out four and walked one.

Madson allowed five runs on five hits in five innings, struck out one and walked five. The right-hander had won his previous three decisions.

Notes

Olmedo Saenz and Alomar hit consecutive doubles off Arthur Rhodes in the eighth, snapping a string of 20 2/3 scoreless innings by the Phillies' bullpen. ... Utley also had four hits May 25 against the New York Mets ... Dodgers CF Kenny Lofton was thrown out attempting to steal second base in the fourth, ending his streak of 19 consecutive stolen bases dating to Sept. 16, 2005, which was the longest in the majors. ... Baez had not allowed a run in his previous 8 2/3 innings, spanning six appearances. ... Gagne was activated Tuesday in Atlanta, but had to serve a two-game suspension and was not available until Thursday.
