CHICAGO -- On the first anniversary of his promotion to the major leagues, Bobby Jenks pitched himself into a jam and, just as quickly, hurled his way out of it.

Jenks gave up three straight hits and a run to open the ninth and then struck out the final three batters with runners at second and third Wednesday night as the Chicago White Sox hung on and beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-2.

"I'm always glad to help somebody else out, but when it's my runs out there, I definitely want to get them out," Jenks said after getting his 26th save in 27 chances and helping Jon Garland win his fourth straight decision.

Jenks struck out pinch-hitter Javy Lopez to end an Orioles' second-and-third threat in the eighth, but had trouble closing in the ninth.

Melvin Mora and Miguel Tejada singled before Jeff Conine doubled off the center field fence to make it 4-2 and put runners at second and third with no outs.

But Jenks then got a called third strike past Corey Patterson, struck Ramon Hernandez out swinging and retired Kevin Millar looking on a 3-2 pitch to end it.

"I was missing my spots so bad," Jenks said. "After those couple of hits, I started hitting my spots again and was able to get myself out it."

Millar didn't agree with the final strike call and walked behind the plate with umpire Gary Darling to discuss it after he made the final out.

"We were able to get the tying run in scoring position," Millar said. "Jenks is as tough as there is when he's throwing his curveball and cutters and 99.9 mile-an-hour fastballs."

Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo wasn't so sure about some of the strike calls, either, in the ninth.

"The guys battled a very tough closer in the ninth," Perlozzo said. "I thought there were a couple of pitches there that were a little questionable but what the heck, I'm not behind the plate."

Jenks, who saved the clinching game of the World Series last year and is headed to his first All-Star Game, was convinced his final pitch was a strike.

"A little backup slider. If you can do that every time, you would be the best pitcher in baseball," he said. "Yeah, it got the plate. If the umpire said it did, it did."

Bolstered by a four-run first inning, Garland (8-3) retired 10 straight before Brandon Fahey doubled with one out in the fourth. Fahey ended Garland's shutout bid with an RBI double in the sixth, scoring Kevin Millar, who had a leadoff double.

The right-hander gave up six hits in 7 1/3 innings.

Orioles starter Daniel Cabrera (4-6) had trouble with his control, a frequent problem this season, and allowed eight hits and six walks in 6 2/3 innings.

The White Sox collected four singles and three walks to score four runs in the first and give Garland the cushion he needed.

Scott Podsednik drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Alex Cintron's single. Jim Thome singled, sending Cintron to third, before Paul Konerko's sacrifice fly made it 2-0. Jermaine Dye singled, A.J. Pierzynski had an RBI single and Joe Crede walked to load the bases. Cabrera then walked Rob Mackowiak to force in a run.

The Orioles threatened in the eighth when Hernandez singled leading off and Millar followed with a double. Garland got Luis Matos to ground to third and then was replaced by reliever Matt Thornton. Thornton retired Brian Roberts on another grounder to third and then Jenks fanned Lopez.

It was the ninth time this season Cabrera had walked five or more batters in a game. Of the 124 pitches he threw Wednesday night, 69 were for strikes. ... Hernandez returned to the Baltimore lineup after sitting out a game to rest his right knee, which he had fouled a pitch off of during Monday's 8-1 win over the White Sox. ... Crede was able to start after being forced out of Tuesday's game when he was hit on the forearm by a Rodrigo Lopez pitch. On Wednesday, he got hit in the leg by Cabrera. ... Chicago 2B Tadahito Iguchi missed his second straight game. He sprained his left ankle in a collision with RF Jermaine Dye in the series opener Monday night. Iguchi might be able to return Friday when the White Sox open a three-game series against the Red Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. ... Orioles OF Nick Markakis missed Wednesday's game after he was sent to a local hospital to have precautionary tests taken on a sore spot on his right calf. He was diagnosed with a strained calf muscle and is scheduled to have an MRI on Thursday.
