Drew stays hot, leads D-Backs' Game 1 rout of Cubs

CHICAGO -- Stephen Drew is providing a late spark for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The rookie shortstop homered, tripled and drove in a season-high four runs, leading the Diamondbacks over the Chicago Cubs 10-2 Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader.

The highly touted prospect made his big league debut on July 15. The younger brother of Dodgers outfielder J.D. Drew, he hit his first homer in the majors during Monday's 15-4 romp at Wrigley Field.

"He's going to be quite a nice little player," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "He's having some fun. He's a little bit of a grinder, but not to the point where he can't have a little fun."

Arizona tied San Diego for the NL West lead with the victory. Drew was not available to the media between games.

Luis Gonzalez homered during a five-run first inning, providing an early cushion for Juan Cruz (4-6).

Cruz gave up one run and five hits in five innings for his first victory since winning at Atlanta on June 1. He had been 0-3 with a 6.38 ERA in five starts after being activated from the disabled list on July 3, having been out because of a sore right shoulder.

"He threw the ball well," Melvin said. "He's a 'plus' velocity guy that's come up with a little cutter now that's working for him."

Gonzalez hit a two-run homer, his 11th, off Carlos Marmol (4-5) to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 13 games. After Shawn Green walked and Orlando Hudson was hit by a pitch, Drew drove a triple off the wall in the right-field corner. Chris Snyder singled home Drew.

Drew had a sacrifice fly in the fifth and hit his second career home run in the ninth.

Marmol (4-5) gave up seven runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings.

"He's always had trouble going out there early," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "He's a little too hyped up. That's what he talked to Pedro Martinez about, and some other guys we had him talk to, about not going out there too (excited)."

The doubleheader was caused by Wednesday's rainout. It was the first doubleheader at Wrigley Field since Sept. 10, 2004, against Florida.

Michael Barrett had an RBI single in the fifth for the Cubs that made it 7-1. Chicago left the bases loaded that inning, and missed another chance in the sixth when reliever Brandon Medders got newly acquired Cesar Izturis to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Cubs stranded 13 runners in the game, but equaled the Diamondbacks in hits with 10.

"It's pretty frustrating," Baker said. "We hit some balls good, but the first inning was a little too much for us."

Chicago's Ryan Theriot got his first career RBI with a double in the ninth.

Notes

  • Juan Mateo made his first career start for the Cubs in the second game.
  • The Diamondbacks placed Andy Green on the 15-day DL in between the games with left shoulder inflammation. He struck out in the sixth as a pinch-hitter. The team activated reliever Mike Koplove from Triple-A Tucson.
  • Cubs reliever Glendon Rusch went on the 15-day DL with an injured left elbow. RH reliever David Aardsma was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Aardsma relieved Marmol and struck out two in a scoreless inning.
