New Pirate Nady's three doubles lead to victory over Cubs

CHICAGO -- Tom Gorzelanny's pre-start preparation went beyond the usual study of hitters, tendencies and scouting reports.

There was an equally important task for Pittsburgh's rookie left-hander before he headed to the mound at Wrigley Field: He had to make sure his family and friends could watch him pitch.

Gorzelanny, a native of suburban Evergreen Park, left 38 tickets for Friday's game. Then he left the Chicago Cubs befuddled by the show he put on for his inner circle.

"My first trip here, to come in here with all my family and friends and doing this. This is a day I'll never forget for the rest of my life," Gorzelanny said after pitching eight stellar innings to lead the Pirates to a 6-0 win over the Cubs.

A hard-thrower who grew up a White Sox fan -- the team that initially drafted him -- Gorzelanny allowed just two singles for his second major league victory. He beat the Giants last Saturday for his first major league win.

"He was terrific," Pirates manager Jim Tracy said. "Just like his previous outing. He threw a ton of quality strikes early in the count, which forced them to start moving the bat."

Gorzelanny outpitched All-Star Carlos Zambrano, whose nine-game winning streak dating back to May 31 was ended as he failed in his bid to become the NL's first 13-game winner. Zambrano (12-4) had been 9-0 in his previous 11 starts, but gave up a season-high nine hits and five runs in six innings.

The Cubs, with Ronny Cedeno starting at second base for the first time in his career, were shaky behind Zambrano in the field.

"Mistakes are in the game and errors are in the game," Zambrano said. "I can do nothing about it. I made a lot of mistakes today pitching and that was all my fault."

Gorzelanny (2-2) struck out seven and walked two. Once he got rid of the early jitters, he was sailing.

"I was walking to the mound and I said, "All right, there's going to be a ton of people here today,"' Gorzelanny said. "But after I got through the first inning, I was more comfortable, more relaxed. All the nerves and butterflies went away and I just went back to pitching."

Josh Sharpless completed the shutout, giving up a single in the ninth.

Xavier Nady, traded from the New York Mets to the Pirates earlier in the week, went 4-for-5 with three doubles.

Jose Castillo and Ronny Paulino homered for the Pirates, who have the worst record in the NL but are 12-8 since the All-Star break.

"I just tried to get some decent pitches to hit and I was fortunate to put a couple of play," Nady said.

Cedeno showed his inexperience at second base -- he'd played 98 games at short before the Cubs acquired Cesar Izturis in a Monday trade for Greg Maddux. And the Pirates capitalized.

Nady doubled with one out in the second and after Jose Hernandez walked, Castillo hit a potential double-play grounder, but Cedeno had trouble getting the ball out of his glove on the pivot. Castillo beat the relay throw, then Paulino lined a ball near the front of the mound that deflected away from Zambrano for an RBI single, putting the Pirates up 1-0.

After a two-out single by Freddy Sanchez in the third, Jason Bay hit a ball into left-center field. As Sanchez moved to third, Bay easily raced to second for a double when Cedeno didn't cover the bag. Nady then hit a sinking liner that went for a two-run double when Cubs left fielder Matt Murton missed a diving catch.

"You knew `Z' was going to lose one before the season was over," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "We had one guy out of position who is still learning to play second base. ... Ronny went out like he was playing short instead of second and allowed the runner to go in there and then the blooper fell in by Nady, who had a real good day today."

Castillo led off the fourth with his 13th homer for a 4-0 lead.

Nady hit his third double in the fifth, advanced on a fly ball and scored on Castillo's infield single.

Notes

  • Jack Wilson, one of the Pirates' best hitters since the All-Star break, didn't start for a second straight game because of a sore calf muscle. Manager Jim Tracy said if Wilson is better Saturday he might be back in the lineup for the series finale Sunday.
  • Cedeno told reporters he broke in a new glove -- one used for second base -- by putting it in the microwave to soften it up
  • Gorzelanny was initially drafted by the White Sox in the 38th round of 2000 but opted for college ball at Kansas and Triton JC. He signed with the Pirates in 2003 after they selected him in the second round. His first major league win came last Saturday against the Giants.
