Rockies stop Webb from becoming NL's first 14-game winner

CBS wire reports

DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies didn't think they saw vintage Brandon Webb on Thursday. And that was just fine with them.

Colorado figured out Webb's sinker early in an 8-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Among the NL leaders in fewest walks per nine innings at 2.93, Webb walked a season-high five in six innings and gave up eight hits as Colorado foiled his bid to become the NL's first 14-game winner. The Rockies roughed him up for six runs in the first two innings.

"His sinkers were up in the zone," manager Clint Hurdle said.

Before the game, Hurdle told his team to be patient and stay away from any pitch Webb (13-5) threw that started belt high or lower.

Ryan Spilborghs followed that advice and homered in his first career plate appearance against Webb, part of a four-run second that also included three doubles.

"It was important," Spilborghs said. "It sent a message that we're coming after him today."

Webb, making his second start since missing an outing with a tender right elbow, wasn't around the clubhouse after the game.

"It wasn't his best, but at times it was back to what we've seen before," manager Bob Melvin said. "There were periods where he was throwing the ball very well. Really and truly, we gave them a few more runs than they had."

In the first, Cory Sullivan and Todd Helton scored when third baseman Chad Tracy threw a two-out, routine grounder away for an error.

Probably the biggest play of the game came in the sixth. With Colorado leading 6-3, Arizona had the bases loaded and no outs when Orlando Hudson hit a fly ball to Spilborghs in left. Conor Jackson tagged from third, and Spilborghs threw him out at home when Yorvit Torrealba blocked the front half of the plate with a foot. Stephen Drew then hit a comebacker that ended the inning.

"Momentum changer," Spilborghs said. "That was big for us."

Colorado moved within five games of NL West-leading Los Angeles, while the Diamondbacks dropped three games back of the Dodgers.

Staked to a 6-0 lead in the fourth, Josh Fogg (9-7) cruised until the pivotal sixth inning. Manuel Corpas relieved with the bases loaded and escaped the jam. He didn't allow a hit in two innings.

"He's been very, very reliable," Hurdle said.

Fogg struck out five and walked three in five innings, improving to 5-0 in his career against Arizona.

"Josh gave us what he had," Hurdle said.

Helton was 1-for-2 with an RBI and three walks, boosting his August average to .350 -- he's the active leader for August batting average at .377. Helton raised his average 11 points in the last week to .298 for the season.

"Funk would be an overstatement," Helton said. "I feel like if I see it I've got a good chance to hit it. I'm a feel hitter, just like there's feel golfers."

Sullivan had a pair of RBI doubles for Colorado.

"I was taking too many fastballs," said Sullivan, who's seen his average raise 31 points since he was hitting .249 on June 9. "I'm trying to be more aggressive."

Didn't that go against Hurdle's advice to be more patient against Webb?

Sullivan smiled.

"I was patiently aggressive," he said.

  • OF Matt Holliday's wrist was too stiff and sore to play in Thursday's game. He did throw before the game. "I felt pretty good," Holliday said.
  • Jackson, Johnny Estrada and Shawn Green each had two hits.
  • Drew's 13-game hitting streak came to an end.
  • Luis Gonzalez hit career double No. 537 in the eighth.
